Can Do
A man can do the best he can
With what he has at hand.
More of him no one should ask,
Nor any God demand.
A task that is so well begun
May not end in glory.
Life lived well under the sun,
Now that's a different story.
You may not reach the apogee
Nor fall you to the nadir.
But make you no apology
The judgment may come later.
A race that dreams about the stars
May never leave the planet.
Perhaps your child will walk on Mars
Or see her face in granite.
Nkosi Johnson, (a twelve-year-old African boy soon to die of AIDS), featured in a book by ABC newsman Jim Wooten, put it well:
Do all you can
With what you have
In the time you have
In the place you are.
Poor William's Whimsical Words:
Verily, it is better to give all you have than to receive more than you can handle.
